A Collection of Haiku

my late father,
Edward Jay Evers
November 3, 1949 — November 29, 2000

This collection of haiku was written during the fall semester of 2004 at Millikin University. Many of these haiku are my responses and heartfelt reactions to other haiku I read. Still others are based on the occurences in my life this past year. I really enjoyed creating these haiku and hope you enjoy reading them.

baby's first Thanksgiving
throwing turkey
at her Daddy

chocolate martinis
with the girls
boyfriends at home

gentle reminder
     hung on the door
--breathe--

after a few drinks
I sleep
among the roses

wilted flowers
on the gravestone—too long
since my last visit

dust settling
follows my home
down the gravel road

light touches
the folded flag
hidden in a dusty drawer

  

 

my father
home for the holidays
in a tiny urn

soft voices
in the graveyard,
i place roses on the ground

  

new tattoo--
a purple rose
forever on her back

silently . . .
i dress
in the dark

  

 

little girl
on daddy's shoulders
steering through the crowd

all alone...
they took the laces
from her shoes

  

winter sunset--
snowflakes
in daddy's hair

calmly, her hand pulls
the needle tight
a silhouette forms on canvas
