Looking Around

by
McKenzie Greene

The art of writing haiku is something that comes in all forms and that we are constantly surrounded by. I never thought I could write haiku before this class, but I’ve discovered that anyone can write haiku if they just take a moment to look around at their surroundings and listen to what the world is saying.

From this class, I have learned how to look around more and be more in tune with nature. I used to always look at my phone when I was walking outside. After starting this class, I now find myself keeping my phone in my pocket and actually looking around at the world moving around me. Also, I have gained a newfound confidence in my writing abilities. There is no pressure to write haiku; it is just being observant and writing what you feel.

my sister walks into my room
which shoes?
ready for a night out

one with the fish
he stays in
till mom calls for supper

golden doodle
walking through the neighborhood
bug along for the ride

little tot swinging
underdog push
from grandpa

the paper falls
to the floor
she cries in the stairwell

picnic basket
in the field
reeling in a big catch

flying a kite
the wind
chooses its destination

bundled up
nose peeking out
a snowflake landing spot

the chase continues
up the trunk
out of sight

typing away
the girl spills coffee
over her entire life
