Weekend Adventures

by
Mikayla Craw

In the art of haiku, the author’s goal is to connect to
their surroundings and be absorbed within it. As you read, I hope you are absorbed into my memories, letting yourself enjoy the experiences. Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and enjoy the ride!

This course has taught me to take a step back and look at this chapter of my life before I move on to the next. I’m about to student teach and graduate, so I think I needed to reflect on my time at Millikin and the last 4 years of college and life in general. It has also shown me another outlet of self-expression and relaxation. With writing haiku, I have learned that it doesn’t have to be perfect or necessarily make sense. The most important part is the emotion behind it. I think this course has shown me that people see the world in many different perspectives, but also experience a lot of commonalities as well.

cornhusks in the breeze
the last night of the weekend

walking through an antique mall
the smell of old books
someone's memories

on the mirror
a lonely kiss

clouds the air
her date waits downstairs

two candles ona cake
then darkness
her wish is granted

black water
she leans over
to see her reflection

we join hands
while father says a prayer
Thanksgiving

the cat naps
