Haiku Kukai 3

standing still
face downcast
praying for the right words

deft fingers on wood
a horrible solo,
but getting better

down by the river
tail lights fade
into the darkness

the bullfrog sings
she jumps
feet first

a cloud floats
longing for neighbors
to throw one last bang

weeding the strawberry patch
the dog pulls on a twig
the cat rolls in the dirt

the waves crash in
a freight train
in the night

door shuts
leaving summer
outside

cuddled in bed
the tiny body
the smell of a newbor

at the edge of the
woods
a statue

the melody begins
their eyes lock
for the first time

rumble rattle
thud
blinking hazard lights

laid to rest
her lifeless body
still beautiful

the intense thrill gone
the soda bottle
failed to fizz

I hear the crowd
I cannot see the flags
keep moving

tears stream down
her aging face
the music plays

he walks
stone by stone
to find a familiar name
