Streetlamp Lullaby

by
Ryan Hickey

Haiku, much like photography, is a snapshot of life. It is an evocation of the memory and the senses that creates a glimpse into the subconscious. That which holds this art form toghether is the thread of universality. The reader and the author are connected by similarity in shared experiences. The challenge fo teh author is to effectively use each line to create an imageā€”one that can be relatable to many. With this in mind, I sought to create a collection of my haiku that exemplified the basic principles of haiku while remaining uniquely my own. Enjoy!

colors and promises
fade as I walk our old path
alone

Taco Night
south of the border
ring of fire

the walk to class
subtle changes each day
as the seasons pass

the young puppy
swimming laps
in my bedsheets

holding him in my arms
contently breathing
a quiet purr

sunday afternoon football
my dad and I lean forward
together

racing out of the tunnel
pads and warpaint
invincible

the pulse drum beating
soft bedding envelops thought
streetlamp lullaby

an alter of flowers
each breath a sickening reminder
he's gone

holding her breath
shadow beneath the closet door
knock knock

three plump stockings hang
where once
there were four

all along I dreamed
I'd find you in his face
his daddy's gone
