Standstill

by
Olivia Cuff

for the lovely haiku class of Fall 2014

Author Intro: I chose the title "Standstill" because of the frozen, caught at a certain point type of vibe I feel many of my haiku give off. Although many of these haiku may not be the happiest haiku, they were chosen because they invoke an incredible image in my mind or give me a chill down my spine. These haiku make me proud and I am very happy to share them with you!

high strung and wound
she twirls on command
jewelry box ballerina

fingers tracing back
my former happiness
cuddling with a memory quilt

summer rain
was I wrong to think
we were right?

distorted vision
my eyes tear filled
from her mother's comment

falling slowly
down the radio station
static

chocolate souffle
from heated to coldness
my heart sinks with it

the newborn
explores the strings
ukulele lullaby

butterfly whispers
"hey squirt"
just like dad did

late night walk home
the shadow behind me
grows quickly

(one) step
towards (two) friends
reunion of musketeers (three)

I give thanks to his doctor
his rightful spot
he sits at dinner

snowflakes decorate my eyelashes ever so softly

heavily dusted
only a lady
dips her fingers in coffee

in a pickle
she sighs and reaches for
a cucumber
