Fading Jack-O-Lantern

hand in our candy bowl
my witch-of-a-mother scolds me
fake wart

dad chuckles
sitting at the kitchen table

she turns
and glares
trouble is coming

this isn't the Halloween
I wanted

a full moon—
the touch of her
werewolf hands on my back

the clap against my skin
sweet music

his favorite song
I danced with
His last picture taken

It sits next to
the light up Jack-O-Lantern

the Jack-O-Lanterns
light dies
just as he did

a Halloween
to forget

looking out the window
at least the trick or treaters
are happy

I follow the raindrops
On the windows

full moon
illuminates
my face

I grow anxious
Hair pops out of my skin

the skin I live in
I identify as
a nice butterfly

two faces
the latter you should fear

pansies
look up to Jesus
blood dripping

I find
a new beginning
