Nowhere To Go

in the corner
of my eye
my childhood skips by

lifelong friends
with salt and pepper hair

childhood comes back
shorted bouts of
remembering

the tire swing
creaks back and forth

where do you think
the moon
goes during the day?

a pop-up book
before bedtime

the story
my mother
used to read

reminds me of the love
I have for happy endings

the forest clearing
bathed in sunlight
grasses swaying back and forth

a bear skulks about
searching for a meal

coffee beans waft
as the couple sits
espresso their feelings

leaving my past
in the dust

the stars shine
like they did
at summer camp

midnight picnic
no ants

driving through town
all night long
nowhere to go

bright blue motel sign
I’ve never noticed before

Aunt Petunia’s dress
is illuminated by the
flickering color

I sit and wonder
when I will see her again
