Haiku From Within

by
Cassie Reed

In the beginning of this class I thought, much like everyone else, that Haiku were just the traditional 5-7-5. I didn’t understand that haiku could be whatever the author wanted them to be. Writing haiku has helped me to become more in touch with my emotions and I think that is highlighted in what I wrote. In each haiku I tried to draw on my past experiences and feelings that I have felt within the past year. I decided to title my piece “Haiku from Within” to highlight this. These haiku are straight from my heart and I hope that people who have gone through similar things can relate to them and keep them within themselves too.

About the Author

Cassie Reed is a sophomore at Millikin. She is a nursing major and she plays catcher on the softball team. The haiku that she has written about are all from personal experience.

oh to know every star
and constellation
on your face

stars in the sky
stepping out of my shoes
to enjoy

rain falls on my window
you aren’t here
to weather the storm

fitting into sizes
fitting into molds
when do I get to be myself?

you didn’t tell me
good luck before my game
I struck out

ocean breeze
sand in my fingertips
this is home

mother moon
always listening
never sharing

the sun shines
less and less everyday
thank god i have You

your head on my shoulder
my thoughts slow down
I am here again

what do I do
with your present now?
i should be over this

the air
becomes crisp with fall
pumpkin spice

the one day of the year
putting on a mask
is praised

Fleetwood Mac on shuffle
friends by my side
bliss
