Haiku

by
Elli Sunde

Learning about how to read and write haiku has enriched my life in a meaningful and lasting way. Before this class I often thought of poetry as something complex or unrelated. However, haiku has taught me that powerful expressions can exist in simplicity. Through this class I learned how a few carefully chosen words can capture experiences, memory, and emotion in ways that feel honest and truly human. Writing haiku has also helped me slow down and truly observe the world and the surroundings around me. Haiku has encouraged me to pay attention to the small moments of sound silence, light and emotion that might otherwise be overlooked throughout the day.

the wildflowers
in the field
count them I fall asleep

kids running
laughing with mud
on my shoes
