Lucky Ending

arranged marriage
kind eyes, sweeter smile
I could love him

first time meeting
at the altar

sweaty palms
unsteady breath
your hand in mine

joining families
taking your name
for mine

love grows
over time

40 years,
three children later
my soulmate

Chance Meeting

Two scoops
Jet black
No cream, no sugar

Tasteful to my sense
Her mocha skin

She scurries towards me
Arms wide open
A big smile

He stands in front of me
Bold

I wish him well
Not knowing
If he will return

From dusk to dawn
We will meet again.

Distant Words

Miles apart
Same sky
And moon

My warm spring
To her cold fall

With pen and paper
time passes
Check mailbox

Sincere words
Crumpled texture
Smooth calligraphy

Sparks fly
he takes a puff

Sweet honey
Another gulp—
Sleep.

A Morning Together

the sun slowly rises
a smile
with our morning coffee

through the window
a robin sings

the clock
tic-tocs
silence consumes us

wooden table
filled with to-dos
yet . . .

rocking chairs creaking
in sync

in the same moment
we reach
for a hand

The Coming of Winter

the bitter cold approaches
an almost bare branch,
the last leaf

a frosty breeze
winter is coming

hot chocolate
warms
a cold mug

the birds fly south
my heart
goes with them

the window frosted
we dream of a warm vacation

snowed in,
the days activities
will wait
