A Story of Laughter

A Story of Laughter

Introduction: A Story of Laughter is the last line of my last haiku in this booklet and perfectly sums up most of the haikus before it. My approach for writing a good haiku was to first put myself in a place of pure happiness and bliss – which usually included coffee, wine, bubble baths, and good company. Once I’m there, I try to lay it out in a way so that others will appreciate it too. I hope these haiku bring you to a place of your own happiness and laughter as well.

the ocean’s waves
rise and sink
I reflect on the year

in a field of sunflowers
I remember
my mother

cool autumn evening
the campfire flame
our only light

sparkling night sky
we walk
deep in conversation

left foot
right foot
the finish line behind me

candle light surrounds me
I sink
into a bubble bath

the sun slowly rises
a smile
with our morning coffee

his skin covers mine
the world       between us

a torn and tattered quilt
my grandmother’s memory
sewn in

between flashing lights
their hearts beat
with the music

on the floor
of this hole-in-the-wall
my shoes stick

the smoky air
in a crowded room
I spot my next adventure

grape on the vine
my glass awaits
its ripening

aged bourbon—
a burning cigar
my company for the night

whiskey on the rocks
numbed
by the slow burn

the sun slowly setting
she leaves me
pouring another drink

eyes surrounded by wrinkles
each one
a story of laughter
