Blooming Blossom

by
Caitlin Marshall

When reading the selected haiku as a whole compendium, one may wonder how the author or organizer may have intended for their thoughts and opinions to be perceived. When I write haiku, in my beginner’s experience, I think of a memory and describe what I see and feel from that memory. I also take what I see from nature and write a haiku on exactly the state I saw nature in. Very often I will use familiar objects, animals, places and seasons that have a direct and relatable relation to myself and my development from youth to present. I believe this approach to work very well for me to get into the headspace required of me to write haiku that will leave the impression of the moment written.

settled under the tree
I see
the first blossom

an empty gym
one ball
bouncing alone

endless giggling
two little girls
surrounded by mud

sitting cross legged
by the grave
the flowers have wilted

windowsill
with a hanging plant
one of the stems is dead

fourth game
thumb war
cheater!
