Enigma

by
Brad Spradlin

The title 'Enigma' stems from many things in my life. The clothes I wear, the people I meet, the places I go, and even the things that I eat. Everything I do in my life, or you do in yours, is an enigma. Life is a mystery, something that cannot be explained and the more you try to figure it out or control it the harder it becomes. Every second of ever day is a mystery to all people and that is where to find beauty in the world - in the unknown that is life. All of these haiku were selected because of my personal love and adoration for not only the haiku itself but the messages behind them.

I close my eyes
and lay back to sleep
welcome silence

the ice cracks
walking over the pond
the shock . . .

longing for
the light's return
inside and out

my mind is empty
like a vase with no flowers
or a heart with no love

I sit here
falling in and out of love
quicksand

from our first breath
to her last
a mother's love

leaves and branches
cover the ground
a blanket on the earth

the watchful eye
of a hungry pigeon
like a hawk

waiting for the show
the lights being to dim
dancing queen begins

the bells ring
for the platinum jubilee
it's the queen

a quiet old man
wearing jeans in the gym
turning back time
