The Grey Ghost

by
Corey McKenzie

Corey McKenzie is your average All-American kid. Growing up in Central Illinois, all he knows is cornfields, firearms, friends, family, and enjoying his time in the woods. You can see these features that make Corey up filling his haiku and is the obvious theme throughout his collection. Corey wants to spread his love of the outdoors to his readers and show them the inner beauty and his true passion for all things outdoors. You will be taken on hunting trips, cold winter mornings, brisk spring days, the hard-working dog days of summer, and the deafening silence one can find in the woods.

in the woods
the grey ghost
strikes again

bird hiding
peacefully
dog on point

oh great . . .
mom and dad
are both here

coming home
cold winter day
everything. gone.

4 a.m.
brisk april morning
the help of an owl

leafless trees swaying
the creeeeak of the old wooden stand
that feeling in my throat

the crunch of the snow
makes it hard
to hide

scratched up stock
scrapes on the barrel
grandpa’s gift

first pocket-knife
whittling a stick
in the woods

one short ear
..oh wait, make that two
my favorite runt

dings and dents
scraped and scratched
but it’s all mine

has that old smell
kicks like a mule.
thanks ‘pa

friday night has come
dad’s jeep
feels like a “crazy train”

tree in the weeds
clover all around
the winter moon
