Transitional Phase

by
Cleah Roberts

I am upcoming senior nursing major, who enjoys reading and writing. I am currently, in a transitional phase in my life. I have gotten my own apartment and feel as though I am not officially taking big steps into adulthood. Many of the poems in the collection touch on the woes of adulthood and the emotions that come along with it.

Haiku is a three-line poem, that captivates the senses and encompasses emotions. Haiku should bring you to a place or idea in your mind. Haiku should be read slowly so that the reader can take all of the words in. Haiku can be written with senses in mind, time, emotion, and even the seasons if necessary. Haiku can be inspired by small things, such as a walk through the park, or strong emotions such as heartbreak. Most importantly, haiku can be enjoyed by all and everyone can have a different take on the same haiku.

they disappear

This is probably my favorite haiku, that I have ever written. It was personal to me because I deal with a lot of anxiety. I think texting makes me anxious because I am always waiting on the person to respond or wondering when they are going to. This was the best way for me to sum that up in a haiku. This is one of my favorites because of the nostalgia it brings to me. It also plays a little song in my head, as I read it. I remember playing this hand game with my cousins as a child and wanted to bring that feeling to this poem. Cleah Roberts, May 2022
