Nurse Haiku

by
Abby Park

I’m Abby, a senior at Millikin University. I began writing haiku for my Global Haiku class to fulfill a credit for college. During this time, I was able to write many meaningful poems that have corresponded to things in my life. Some of the things that have inspired me are my job as a tech in St. Mary’s Emergency room, where I have spent most of my days this summer. Other things are childhood, past relationships, struggling to be a teenage girl, and so much more. I’m excited to share my haiku with you. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did writing them.

ribs cracking
in between small fingers
no pulse

breakfast is served
with a side of
15 mg of adderall

another drink down
burns as it goes
sunday’s sorrow lingers

birthday candles blown
she wishes
to be thin

patient losing blood
no transfusion ordered
Jehovah Witness

drunk giggles
2 am
pillow talk

your warmth
missing from
the blue sheets

rich kids
rolled dollar bills
fake friends

messy blonde hair
sun coming up
white lingerie

cold bathroom tile
steamy shower runs
the girl cries
