Selected Haiku
by

Nicky Bachtold

The most interesting aspect of haiku is capturing a perfect moment in time and describing it a manner that others can sense the moment for themselves. Haiku is the art of recalling an image with a few key words so others can experience the same moments through their eyes. Haiku tells a story, it evokes the senses. It is descriptive and reflective, yet more implied than stated. But most important is the honesty of the images that haiku provides.

Haiku allows each of us to create our own understanding. My haiku represents pieces or moments of my life that have captured me and will live inside of me always . Sources that provide those moments tend to be my family and life experiences that have left significance for me whether they may be funny or sad. My favorite haiku below usually contains seasonal element and hopefully represents if only slightly, the powerful literary art that haiku truly is.

summer night
lying in quiet
days secrets are told

the wet road winds sharply
my headlights flash
on lovely placed flowers on the guardrail

crickets humming
sleeping bags zip
all is quiet

stopping once again
stomach churns
elevator silence continues

talking strangers
gazing at trinkets in the garage
summer morning

     Stubborn

close summer heat
feet thump the pavement
miles down the road

black ribbon path
deafening silence

alone with my thoughts
rhythm to my pace
breathing through the heat

never ending hills
battling to the end

legs feel tired
body glistens with sweat
fluid motion

last turn to home
Best time yet!
