Memories: Selected Haiku by Glen Sims

Introduction

When I first decided to take global haiku it was just to meet my global studies requirement. I wasn’t sure what haiku was or even if I would like it but I knew I enjoyed reading poetry. After classes began I was excited that haiku was something that we could write from memories from our past and not just reading it. Interpreting the haiku I read was enjoyable and brought back memories even though some of them were not good memories.

Listening to the other students haiku was fun because I was able to learn about what they enjoyed in life. Writing the rengay with my family was a lot of fun because I got to here what excited them about camping and walking through the woods. The following pages have some of my favorite haiku and a rengay.

morning dew
crackling fire
birds singing

You can see that Glen enjoys nature very much and that enjoyment entails being around family. As you read Glen’s haiku, you will be able to vision what he is relating to and many will probably have the same experience.

a dog sniffs
            in the weeds

lightning bug
         caught in a web
in the woods

         snake sunning
         on a rock

a cool breeze—
         blows through the trees
the leaves rustle

         a small brook
         almost dry

deer trails . . .
like highways
through the tall weeds

         thunderclouds roll in
         as the sun sets

         SUMMER BREAK

summer night
kids playing
in the rain

as it beats down to earth

rainbows forming

oil floating on
puddles in the road
birds singing

         the splash of cars

as they pass by

children laughing

the mosquitoes are out
with the fireflies

         June bugs dance

on the screen door

mother looks on

summer evening
smell of
fresh cut grass

morning dew . . .
            birds searching
for worms
