haiku

by
Jami Martin

When I first decided to take a haiku course, I was a little apprehensive. I knew very little about poetry, except for what I had learned in grade school and high school. The most that I remembered going into this class was the 5-7-5 rule. Dr. Brooks taught us that was not always the case, and made both learning and writing haiku an enjoyable experience. I love the fact that “less is more” is a rule of thumb for haiku. I found that I could write haiku about most everything in my life, and it was fun to see how others perceived it.

twenty-one gun salute
in the bright winter sun
a baby coos

tears are shed
as she reads his words
not meant for her

unexpected family time
huddled in the basement
waiting

Present Tense

smiling at her
in the dressing room...wishing
she had saved her clothes

same image in the mirror
years earlier

mother and daughter
wearing the same styles
twenty years apart

memories come full circle
bell bottoms

80's music record
familiar in present
leg warmers

rain
lightly coming down
counting the worms

open a door
but don't close another
where does it end
