Haiku in Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.

PACE Global Haiku • Millikin University
January 19, 2009

at the bridge
the young man
leads the old men across

January snow
to our knees . . .
march in remembrance

Let freedom ring
on all of God's children
. . . I have a dream

cold and tired
a woman refuses
to give up her bus seat

up on a balcony
one man cries out
a nation listens

summer heat
boom
4 girls lay dead
in the church’s rubble

April 4, 1968
a fatal shot . . .
the world weeps

brave man
one dream
rights for all

the march
so little sound ~ by so many
so loud ~ heard by all

a blind man
no whites, no blacks
just people

massed crowd
speaker’s message
equality

a single voice . . .
calling out to the world
let freedom ring!

January holiday
children of all colors
share a dream

no hatred
while we march collectively
sharing a dream

the chill of winter
a king lays to rest
cold hearts

dreams are fleeting
but his,
We remember
