haiku

hot summer night—
riding through the fireflies
by the pale moonlight

the whistle blows
loud
like a tornado siren

a hint of sprinkles
over hollies and Santa’s
the cookie cutters shape

down to the pool
up the ladder
off into the woods

fluffy white sand
under my feet
cool tide rising

been gone so long
can’t remember
how I got here to begin

wish things were better
can only hope
still have my health
