haiku

by
Mary Birmingham

Global Haiku has been my first poetry class plus my first introduction to haiku poetry. After reading different types of haiku, and listening to readings in class, I found myself not only intrigued, but realized that I had developed a unique interest and certain respect for the beauty of the poetry itself. After attempting the writing assignments, I have also realized that I enjoy the way you can release certain feelings by expressing memories from the past. I also love the fact that haiku can be for anyone who wishes to try to let themselves be known. Haiku gives you the ability to express what is most dear to you such as: deceased parents, southern heritage, your dogs, and memories from the past. I think I enjoy reading all types of Haiku but I believe it is a release for me to talk about things that would not interest others in a given conversation. I hope it doesn’t bore you now

family rocker
creaks her lullaby
old faithful

glasses on the nightstand
no longer seeing
ghost from the past

one dark night
almost death
daughter prays . . .

blue pools
looking up at me
apple of my eye
