My First Haiku Baby Steps

by
Diane Bailey

In our Global Haiku class, I learned that Haiku is not defined by syllable structure or nature, but rather it is the artist's sharing of a memory concisely in a way that will allow the reader's memories and senses to be sparked by his or her own personal experience.

To enjoy Haiku and to capture the full essence of the artist's work, it is important to read Haiku

. . . looking
at my youth . . .
in granddaughter's face

the sound of his breath
in the dark
eases my mind

attic stairs
to the unknown
a military trunk

trumpets
in the convertible
his smile
