A Cacophony of Thoughts

by
Elizabeth Pillow

When choosing to take Global Haiku, I truly wasn’t sure what to expect. I have never been extremely eloquent, especially in my writing. I feel far more confident speaking in front of people, and verbally communicating with people, so writing has always been something that has always challenged in many different ways.

After taking this class, do I think that I am the greatest poet of all time? No. Do I think that I always used proper tactics for writing that were universal, and inherently easy for others to see themselves in? No. But, did I have fun? Yes. Did I learn something about myself through writing these poems, no matter the quality? Absolutely.

Haiku, I have found, is a way for a person to just put a small statement into the universe. No one ever has to read it, they don’t have to understand it, but it is there. It is born and the thought is taken from the author to the page. It is a release in a way.

During the past semester, which has truly been an interesting time for myself, I have been able to find a small release with every haiku I have written. This collection consists of truly a cacophony of my thoughts about love, friendship, beer, family, and myself, and I truly hope that you enjoy seeing even a glimpse into myself.

waking from a dream
so vivid I could’ve sworn
you were here

far from home
in a place
I call Home

deep in my bones
I feel the wind
under my skin

crystal clear, sunny sky
deception
through the window

if we could love
stars wouldn’t be so
dim

grasping for that last beer
                           nothing
..shit

masking what
I wish
you’d unmask

littered with remnants
of our material lives
the kitchen table

my friend,
you’ll never know
all my love

my tuba boy
if only you knew
the way I blush
