4

phone rings
sleeping in
snow covers everything

Noah Meyers

This haiku really brings me back to when I was younger. When I woke up early in the morning to see snow on the ground, I would wait for the phone call so that I could go back to bed and sleep in. It also brings a lot of sound and imagery in this haiku, the sound of the phone ringing while looking out at the snow covering everything. Kaylee Holland, Winter 2024

6

coffee brewing
with heavy eyes
another day begins

Addy Kirkpatrick

I loved this haiku because this is me every morning. The coffee brewing and heavy eyes really shows a lot of imagery in this haiku. Reading this haiku out loud makes me think of the mornings I am very tired with those heavy heavy eyes forcing myself to get out of bed to make that cup of coffee before my day begins.  Kaylee Holland, Winter 2024

7

football Sunday

Carlene Hawkins

My second favorite haiku that I chose was 7. I loved this one because it reminded me of the football Sundays that I spend with my family. This was a day that me and my dad also got to bond because this is his favorite thing to do, watch football. Especially cheering on the Las Vegas Raiders which is a special thing between me and my dad. We put on our Raiders jerseys and no matter the outcome of the game it always ended in quality family time. Addy Kirkpatrick, Winter 2024

10

hectic morning
I rush but
missed the school bus

Carlene Hawkins

The reason I enjoyed this haiku so much was because I can relate to it. I remember in first grade when I was running late for the bus and missed it. I was devastated. Gannon Harshman, Winter 2024

This Haiku brought me back to the days before I was 16 having to ride the bus into town for school every morning. The worst feeling in the world is hearing the bus pull away right as you are trying to get out of the door. The anger on Mom's face when that would happen especially in the winter meant she would have to get into the cold car to bring us into town. Dawsen Loafman, Winter 2024

Keegan Gephart

I enjoy this haiku. It seems to me you are explaining the Hickory Point Mall being empty. And those soft pretzels at Auntie Anne’s are amazing. Gannon Harshman, Winter 2024

Michael Breedlove

I also really enjoyed number 19. It reminded me of being little and driving around different neighborhoods looking at Christmas lights. Because it's so cold, the windows fog up and you can draw images in it. If I’m being completely honest, I still do that now sometimes. The poem also reminds me of when it rains and you watch two raindrops race down the window. There is so much imagination in being young. Tabitha Barowsky, Winter 2024

21

watercolor sky
over crashing waves
exhale

Dawsen Loafman

I enjoyed the “watercolor” sky complimenting the literal body of water that sits just beneath it. The blurred and blended colors of a watercolor while still maintaining a sense of vibrancy and playfulness paints the picture (no pun intended” rather well. Seeing the sky and being able to also implement the audio of the crashing of the water is a very nice touch by giving two different senses, but is improvement more by the visual, audio, and touch sensation of the simple “exhale”, as I can see my chest rise, hear the breath leaving, and feel my chest decompress as I let it out. Dylan Hill, Winter 2024

23

emergency
a scared parent
battery dead

Michael Breedlove

This haiku reminded me of when I was traveling to a party with my friends, and I had been texting my aunt throughout the night. Just to keep her updated about a few of my whereabouts. My phone was already losing its battery and I didn’t want to drain it anymore, but my aunt had kept calling. To prevent this from keep happening, I turned off my phone so it wouldn’t completely die, and I’d have some juice left for when we go home. I turned my phone back on and my aunt had sent me a lot of text messages and was upset I wasn’t answering. I let her know what happened the following morning and everything was okay. Mariah Crawford, Winter 2024

24

mailman
at the festive mailbox
bills due

Michael Breedlove

I like this haiku because I think it shows that even with the holidays around life keeps going on. A family is trying to buy presents for their kids and other relatives. It's that  time of year where people are typically  splurging and not necessarily considering the costs. The bills will come around to that festive mailbox. I can imagine the stress you fell walking down the driveway to the decorated mailbox because at this point in life mail isn't necessarily fun. McKenna Beals, Winter 2024

26

sharp words roll
off his tongue
never to be spoken again

Emma Cox

This haiku reminded me of a few arguments I have had, and the feelings attached to them. When someone says something that cuts deep, it feel like your heart sinks. You can also feel the emotions flooding. I wonder if the writer wrote this about a argument they had personally or if it was one they witnessed. I can imagine parents having an argument about something and a child walks in and hears a snippet. One parent says something that crosses a line, but they never speak of it again. Mariah Crawford, Winter 2024

27

dawn to dusk
I sit, awaiting
the shine of the night sky

Emma Cox

I relate to this haiku an ungodly amount it seems like. I’m such a night owl and most of the time when I’m going to be productive and clean or do almost anything. As the haiku states, “I sit, awaiting the shine of the night sky”, I feel like that’s what I do more than half of the time. Especially when I work all day and it’s “dusk” when it’s time for me to clock out, go home, and enjoy myself with whatever time I have for the night. Hayley Fitzpatrick, Winter 2024

through the distance

Gannon Harshman

I think my favorite was number 30. I was immediately taken to the scene in Pocahontas where she and John Smith meet for the first time. I think that image will always be burned into my brain. It was just so beautiful how she raised slowly through the mist from the waterfall. The more I am reading Haikus, the easier it seems to be to both recognize and create the image in my head. Tabitha Barowsky, Winter 2024

31

watching the news
waiting for the call
school’s canceled

Gannon Harshman

Haiku number 31 is one of my favorites because I think of my childhood and how much I miss being a kid. I also can’t believe how kids nowadays will never know the feeling of having to wake up early in the morning to watch the television to wait for the name of your school to run across the bottom of the screen. This haiku brought back good memories. The emotions I felt while reading this haiku were nostalgia and happiness. Carlene Hawkins, Winter 2024

33

the whole family
all together
but one

Kobe Roulx

I enjoyed number 33 about the family being all together but one. I feel like this haiku brings out all sorts of emotion. There’s happiness of course because the family is together, but sadness because maybe it doesn’t feel complete. There’s one person missing, whether that being they couldn’t make it, they’re running late, they’ve passed, whatever the case may be. I know at my families gatherings we’re always waiting on someone to arrive so we can finally eat and enjoy our time together. But we also are always thinking about loved one that have passed that should still be here and enjoying the time with us. Hayley Fitzpatrick, Winter 2024

Haiku number 33 is one of my favorites because my mind goes immediately to my dad. With my dad passing away in May 2023, me and my family experienced our first Thanksgiving and Christmas without him. We were all together for the holidays but unfortunately missed him. The emotions felt while reading this haiku were sadness and grief. Carlene Hawkins, Winter 2024

34

35

frost
on the car
waiting to heat up

Gannon Harshman

I really liked this haiku. It well encapsulates the need to go somewhere during the winter but needing to wait due to fogged windows and snow on it. I remember often needing to get out of my house much earlier to clear my windows of frost and snow obstruction vision. Keegan Gephart, Winter 2024

This one brings me back and even relates to right now with the cold weather and cars needing to be warmed up. A singular image pops up in my head when I think about this Haiku, I remember taking a photo of my car warming up in the driveway as the sun crested the hill in the distance revealing the thick layer of frost on my car. Dawsen Loafman, Winter 2024

36

37

baking by her side
treats simply
made with love

Mariah Crawford

I liked this haiku because it reminded me of slumber parties at my grandma’s house. We would always make peanut butter dog treats for the neighborhood dogs. I would be on a tall stool that was right next to her while we make the treats, and she taught me the best way to make them. It reminds me of the patience my grandma has and the love she wanted to share with everybody. Addy Kirkpatrick, Winter 2024

39

40

41

dusk descends
over the open pages
words lull tired eyes

Hayley Fitzpatrick

The light of the sun actively shifting over the pages as you lose the last part of the day is a very nice movement within the piece and gives almost a time lapse as you imagine the sun finally diving too far beneath the horizon to provide any more light. The words of the pages slowly causing he reader to drift to sleep in time with the “sleeping” of the sun is a nice complimentary image. I've spent many days and nights reading for hours on end and so this haiku spoke to me on a rather personal level, as many nights I've fallen asleep with a book still in hand. Dylan Hill, Winter 2024

45

back to school echoes
laughter in the empty halls
new friendships

Kaylee Holland

This shows the part of the cycles of friendships in school. Another possible theme this is trying to show is that the author is looking back at the time they had during their time in school. They might look back at the old days and miss those times feeling a void in their heart when they describe empty halls and echoes. Keegan Gephart, Winter 2024

cake and ice-cream
at the bowling ally
wrapped presents

Michael Breedlove

I really enjoyed this haiku because it gives a nostalgic feeling. A child having a birthday party at the bowling alley with all their friends. Your parents brought the cake and ice-cream that will be dished out after a couple games. Maybe it's a little warm in the bowling alley since you're running around with all your friends. There's an arcade and you beg your parents to let you play a few games, which, of course, they let you since it's your birthday. It's a time of fun and joy, especially looking back at the day.
