Essay on
Vietnam War Haiku

Empty Fortune Cookies

by
Brittany Walsh

This collection of haiku was written during a time of transition and new opportunities. Many of these haiku are written through a reflective lens. Reflecting on life, love, nature, and the mundane, I set out to put to words the feelings and images that are often difficult to describe. Each haiku tells a story of mine, but it is up to the reader to create their own story when reading these haiku.

snowman
stands alone
protecting the house

cover of night
crystal clear water
skinny dipping

sitting on the roof
overlooking
the ants

seats filled by men
making decisions
about my body

dead plants
somehow
stay upright

the only time
I saw you in a suit
your funeral

I click my pen
to pass the time
away from you

slicing onions
to justify
my tears

a lit cigarette
brings me back
to life
