MEMORIES:
HAIKU

by
Candace Golden

My haiku represent a lifetime of memories. Each haiku gives light to a specific time in one's life. Specific haiku try to capture the essence of childhood while others deal with difficult moments that one may come across.

I find that a majority of my haiku have a sense of loneliness and detachment. Some of these haiku are real and some fictitious. I tried to capture the subtle moments of life that people often seem to carelessly forget.

flashlights dance
under a blanket tent
hushed giggles

finally bundled up
freezing outside
"I have to go to the bathroom"

father and son
lie in the snow
angels left behind

my mother checks
her make-up
another man's mirror

staring at shoes
train slowly rocks me
I grasp the bar

dusty with cobwebs
the red boots
against the doorframe

my mother lies alone
a fresh grave next to hers
he went home to her

pumpkin pie
without Mom
. . . doesn't taste the same

bathed in hot water
soaked through and through
the tea bag rests against the cup
