No Way to Reach Me:
Selected Haiku

by
Carol Colby

The following haiku were written throughout my semester-long haiku course. I learned so much about haiku and what it means, as well as the powerful affect it has on readers and writers alike.

The simplicity of haiku, and the use of only a few select words emit a powerful message to the reader, and that can be more powerful that a longer poem. I selected the following haiku for this collection based on the responses I got from my classmates, as well as the feelings and moods they produce.

lean in the doorway
train glides by…
morning cigarette

alone
hot chocolate, TV, and a new Vogue
good night

sunlight and dust
mingle together
on Cosmo’s fur

on the porch
we shriek
as the branches crash

foot taps lightly
rustling of papers
during the exam

swaying in his arms
feet sticking
to the beer stained floor

musty apartment
smell of cologne and dust
reminds me of you

sheets of rain
smell of wet cement
refresh me

we laugh
as we stumble home
my hand in his

raking leaves
breeze on my cheek
laughter in my eyes
