tried to leave
the car seatbelt
still on

As I said in class, this haiku could mean a lot of different things. However, I read it as a metaphor since “tried to leave” is so open. Tried to leave what? The car? A relationship? A family? Yourself? “Still on” being the last line works great here too instead of something like “holding me back.” Eden Niebrugge, Spring 2025
