through the balcony
shoes off

glancing my way
I gag

reliable hot chocolate
and sturdy slippers
mom still warms me up

back rested on
a brick wall
wind turning the page

calling mom
her drive home
never alone

deceit and lies
twisting reality
the weather app

rush to class
every minute
shorter than last

blush cheeks
we hold hands
her face wine red

in and out
hook through yarn
as friends voices fill the air

chorus of clicks
my laptop sings
the homework anthem

sun is setting
and to-do list still empty
sleep envelops me

fluttering of wings
and taps of shoes
both alive

red light
she heads across
to the quiet side

birds flee
from a growling sky
the game is called

dying deer
hangs on the fence
sheriff pulls the trigger

through the firelight
we kiss with our eyes
an owl keeps calling

I take a deep breath
