A one credit course on writing haiku was first piloted at Millikin University as a creative writing roundtable workshop at Millikin University, Fall semester, 1994.

The students met once a week to share readings from The Haiku Handbook and from contemporary haiku journals. Three of the student haiku were published by Modern Haiku.

Each student also studied chapbooks by single authors and created their own small collections, which were read during finals week at Richards Treat Student Center.

The primary goal of this course was to introduce the students to the artistic discourse community of current haiku writers and editors. In this course students:

1. wrote and shared observed moments of feeling and insight,

2. developed awareness of the evocative power of sensory images,

3. develoedp editing skills for exact wording, tight expression and sequencing,

4. corresponded with and/or met Midwestern haiku writers, and

5. learned how to publish their work through submissions and readings.
