Ball is Life

by
Elijah Henry

I’ve been playing basketball for 15 years from right now. I watch college and NBA basketball a lot when I was a kid and I decided to play. I started on playing teams for my grade school and I thought I was good at it. When I’m at home I use to do push ups and sit ups all the time and just playing with my basketball in my room. When I hit middle school, it became much serious to me because a lot of people started watching and there was a lot of good competition. On the summer of 2010 I went to New York the whole summer to play basketball for one of my fathers friends. Coach Screen really taught me how to play basketball and the dynamics of stuff and how would I fit in. He made sure I was working hard all summer long by playing hard and doing everything correct. And If I messed up he would yell at me to do suicides and doing pushups and that made me a better person mentally and physically. I’ve been playing against older people my whole life and when it comes down to playing people my age it’s going to get easier. The end of the summer I went back to Chicago where I was living and played for this league team called Faam and also my school team, I really improved. A lot of people kept saying to me I got better. I was one of the best players in those leagues. When I got to high school it was serious business. I played varsity all for years and got a change to play a lot. All those years I got really better on my game improving people I can be successful. I’ve been a tall guy all my life so I always played down low in the post. I was a good post scorer and rebounder. I can play inside and outside but when I was a kid I was the tallest person in my grade. When I played with older people they was a lot physical and I had to be really active when I’m playing too. Today I play hard and tough. Playing for the Millikin mens basketball team is a great success for me basketball my last school I went to I didn’t do anything for them and now this is the opportunity to show people that I can play.

when the shot
goes up
the war begins

getting to the line
everytime
I get the ball

summer day
have on jordans
time for street ball

dunk the ball
and hang on
like a monkey

raining outside
all day
under my covers
