Haiku

by
Vance Martinez

Haiku is the present moment. I find that the joy of creating the present moment with Haiku both fascinating and a paradox. On one end, we are bringing to life that which is fleeting while at the same time opening it up to the possibility of its impossibility. What do I mean by that? It means that our language has an inability to truly capture any kind of objectivity, leaving us to be archeologists of language. Haiku is an art form, like many others, that demand openness, critic, challenge, and purpose. The beauty in haiku lies in its simplicity and honesty. Haiku represents our human drive to find meaning in complexity. I hope you enjoy these little moments of life.

careful sip of tea
later, empty
I am it

perched on my cushion
hum of the furnace
an itch on my face

bundled up
brutal wind as I walk
daydreams of spring

an ordinary day
clink of my cereal bowl
out the door

aisle after aisle
choice after choice
chips and beer

I bow to the buddha
the kitchen is a mess
I bow to it

two scoops
jet black
no cream, no sugar
