Discussion
Panel on the Internationalization of Haiku
Sunday
morning, one of the last events was a panel discussion on
the internationalization of haiku. Discussion leaders on
the panel included Ikuyo Ishimura, David Cobb, Susumu Takaguchi,
Bill Higginson, and George Swede.
In general,
the panel expressed a desire for interaction between haiku
groups and writers around the world, but that efforts to
create a universal or single approach to haiku should be
avoided.
Haiku
grows out of the local with an artistic response to that
culture's literary traditions. Language is always contextualized
by place, and the charm of sharing our haiku from around
the world is often not the sameness but our differences.
