For the Main Characters in My Life

by
Lily Moore

My favorite haiku to read were always the ones that were personal to the author. I liked to see a glimpse of their life in their haiku. Whether the author was writing about their children or spouse, or even their dog, I love when they touch on their relationship and special moments with people in their lives. When I started writing haiku, I found myself, similarly, writing haiku about personal things going on in my life. Those ended up being some of my favorite haiku that I wrote all semester. When I read some of my haiku to my mom, she agreed with me that she really liked it when I wrote about the people in my life and about personal things.

So, I gathered a collection of my favorite haiku that did just that. I wanted them to be personal and also highlight all of the wonderful relationships I have with my friends and family. These people are the main characters in my life and I hold much appreciation for them.

in my childhood bed
the mirror reveals
a 20 year old

doing homework
the background music
shit talk

home
the roads I can drive
with my eyes closed

home from college
a running greeting
from my blind dog

the comfort
I find
sitting at his grave

rekindled friendship
laughing about
why we hated each other

wine in hand
we plan
grandpa’s funeral

going out
we play dress up
like little girls

he spelt his name
almost right
they grow so fast

prom pictures
the boy
I used to know
