Moments Woven in Silence

by
Emma Cox

This collection, Moments Woven in Silence, captures the quiet beauty of my everyday life and memories. Those fleeting moments that often go unnoticed. Each haiku reflects a simple yet profound connection to nature, my relationships, or the passage of time. The title I’ve provided speaks to the stillness and reflection that inspired these haiku, where silence becomes a thread weaving together the stories of seasons, emotions, and cherished memories. May these haiku invite you to pause, reflect, and find meaning in life’s quiet moments.

Learning to read and write haiku has taught me to slow down, notice life’s small details, and find beauty in simplicity. It has unlocked a creative side I didn’t realize I had, showing me how powerful a few words can be in capturing moments and emotions. As a future high school biology teacher, this mindfulness will help me inspire students to observe and appreciate nature’s intricacies. Haiku has also enriched my personal life, teaching me to value the present and process emotions through reflection. This art form has been a meaningful way to connect with myself, others, and the world around me.

we sip
one milkshake
two straws

summer carnival
the Ferris wheel stops
just as we hold hands

tail flicks in my face
as I sip my coffee
now it's cat-flavored

December begins
I help grandpa
untangle the light strands

best friend
and mother
wrapped in one

snow crunch
hearing the call
of the crow

a crow hops
between headstones
life amid stillness

flour dust
grandma's guidance
and love in every bite
