Reader Response Essay
Body of Evidence

US

by
Kailey Lyons

This collection explores feelings of love, lost, and the complexity of relationships. I come from a broken family and some very upsetting relationships. Therefore, I have been through the things I write about. I aim to make my haiku as open ended and visually appealing as possible. Great haiku will take the reader to their own world so they can develop their own interpretations of my own. I must stress that this collection is not directed only towards relationships between a couple. My most valued relationships are with family and friends and deserve acknowledgement. The title “Us.” represents all of the most important people in my life. Us as a family, us as friends, and us as lovers. These emotions of love, loss, and complexity is something everyone goes through, but with their own “Us”.

his hands
her skin
an endless love affair

gripping each other
tighter
through the scary parts

summer air
s-p-r-e-a-d-s
my lovers ashes

eyes. . .
greener than
American money

an instant connection
through the kennel cage
            he’s the one

late night
she walks into the bar
      one drink turns to 2

get out of the house!
     wait . . .
leave that key behind.

Mom says
kiss the children goodbye
        warrants are being served tonight

after school surprise
            the family
has a new member

dad casts the line
                    I wait
for a tug

night after night
    he sleeps on the couch
        instead of his bed

on the bus
homemade beats
approaching our rivals field

i share my bed
with the monster
supposed to be under it
