Haiku Through Summer

by
Lydia Trump

I took this class as it was recommended to me by multiple people. I wasn’t intending on taking any classes this summer, but came to the conclusion that I need to get some more classes out of the way. I came into this class under the impression that all haiku were 5-7-5. I had no idea that haiku was much different than this. This class has given me a new found love and understanding for poetry. I have learned how much poetry can speak to a person. I have learned how much emotion can be shown through so few words. I am interested to see how taking this class will have me interpreting the world after I am done. This class has given me so much knowledge of haiku that I didn’t know existed. I am glad that I took this class and got to experience what poetry can show people. I love the imagery that haiku gives people. I love that people can experience the same haiku in many different ways. To me, this is what makes haiku great. This collection shows the haiku that I believe are my best work.

bundled up
breath turned to fog
cold evening run

pigtails swing
black lab follows
green grass

tulips fold shut
as they both walk
separate ways

nervouse conversation
awkward silence
fancy dinner

he gives a knowing look
as they both reach
for the check

driving home
constantly checking
the rearview mirror

moving back home
one month later
walls still bare
