Gleaming Through the Darkness

by
Nevada Blake

Over the course of the Global Haiku class, we have discussed haiku. Its origins, types of haiku and the basics of the form. The haiku I have collected below are my favorites that I have written in the past two weeks. Some of them have tidbits of my best lyrical writing. Others are personal and I want to share it with a greater audience. The title I have settled on is a line from one of my haikus but embodies the overall theme and outlook I have in life. "Gleaming Through the Darkness" collects poems about happy childhood moments, humorous glimpses of life, moments of queer pride, and poems that evoke darkness overall.

a storm rages
two little girls
saving the worms

to the shooting star
granter of wishes
stop ignoring me please

water lilies
rainbow beams down
on a pond

velvet flowers
muddy hands
dig into the earth

along the border
mi abuela buscan
no rattler in sight

black dress
a hotel room
in an unknown city

animal bones
scattered in the forest
a puppy brings one home

late night reading
light reflects back
from the pages

makeup wipes
mu lipstick
staining her lips
