Essay on Peggy Lyles

Selected Haiku
by

Frank Brannock

I would like to thank Dr. Brooks for making the learning and writing of haiku fun for me. This has been truly the only enjoyable writing experience I have had.

I have written most of my haiku on my patio or outside somewhere. I normally do not care for writing of any kind but this has been fun. I was trying to keep the haiku as short as I could, but attempting to create a scene or activity in the readers mind. So here is the haiku I selected for my book.

turtle on the log        soup to night

first light
glassy water
broken by first cast

warm autumn day
two lovers
walk in the woods

wind rows
sweet smell of fresh cut hay
on the summer breeze

eagle wings
warrior’s soul
carried home

cold morning
young hunter
watches shadow deer

cool morning
long line at ramp
crappie biting

warm afternoon
still pond
nothing to fish with

     day's catch

man on a mower
cutting tall grass
thoughts turn to fishing

     daybreak at waters edge
     headlights peer into heavens

bright sky
shows beaver hut
where fish hide

     a tail slaps the water
     and the cork disappears

day's catch complete
removing entrails
a man enjoys a beer

     the sun sets
     on fresh cut grass
