Family Matters:
Selected Haiku

In memory of Elsie Mae Scott
1930-2007

My name is Tamara Foster. I am truly married to my best friend. We have been married for nine years and have three young sons. My family lives in Sullivan, Illinois and we are very grounded in this area. We have a great church family and our children are surrounded by their grandparents.

I really enjoy writing haiku and I am inspired by my family and what goes on around me. I live in a setting I like to refer to as “organized chaos.” I write about true experiences and want to share the chaos of my life with others.

This small collection is a group of memories that I found close to my heart. Each haiku included has a special tie to someone in my family. Please enjoy!

another autumn walk
hand in hand
our anniversary

I climb in bed
the sheets are warm
he’s already snoring

a quiet prayer for snow
backpack full
of unfinished homework

  

passing the cemetery
her grandson asks
where’s the road to heaven . . .

living room rug
my boys telling stories
of grandma

  

trying on glasses
reflection in the mirror
he sees a little daddy

toddler on the move
bruised cheek
portraits cancelled

  

oak kitchen table
dented and scratched
memories made
