All Over the Place

by
Aiden Etchason

Haiku is a simple form of Japanese poetry designed to be read from the present point of view. It is written in a specific format of just three lines. Haiku can be about anything ranging from sports to food to music, etc. That’s the beauty of haiku. Whatever is going on or interests one in their daily lives can be written about. Haiku is designed for the reader to interpret and enjoy. In three simple lines, a world of emotions one never thought possible can take over the body. Haiku is a special gift we all can use to benefit out lives for the better.

When I first began this course, I was knee deep in football, classes, getting adjusted to a new environment, and just the pressure and stress that change can bring about. Being able to find a quiet place and just meditate and write haiku about nature and life around me was a really peaceful thing to be able to do. I spent most of my time writing either in Rock Springs, or in the living room of my home here in Decatur. It really helped me to be able to find peace and comfort during the stresses of school.

crack of pads
with whistles all around
a fall night in the Midwest

washing the car
my world
strangely feels at peace

the chime of the bell
and laughter of children
repeat tomorrow

class and practice
finally completed
is it dark already?

waiting patiently
his line bobs
the bass too quick

the checkout line
stretches for miles
grandpa needs a snack

a walk on a quiet afternoon
my dog decides
to create conversation.
