A CALL'S LOONby Vandana Parashar High/Coo Chapbook Award 2025 ISBN 978-1-929820-38-2 perfectbound ~ ~ ~ About the Author Vandana Parashar is a postgraduate in Microbiology. After working as an educator for almost ten years, her health issues gave her a much-needed break from everything. As if it was meant to be, she got introduced to haiku around that time. A self-proclaimed introvert who loves nothing more than finding herself lost behind and in books, she admits that staying at home and daring herself to try something she’s never done before proved to be a life-altering blessing in disguise. Although she has always lived close to nature, she admits that when writing, her default setting is senryu. As any introvert does, she loves to observe and explore human idiosyncrasies. Her writing draws inspiration from Natalie Goldberg’s words: “Write what disturbs you, what you fear, what you have not been willing to speak about. Be willing to be split open.” Women issues are very close to her heart, and she always finds herself wanting to address them in the hope that her two daughters would know everything they wish to and must know, as she wanted to when she was their age. Her debut e-chapbook, I Am, was published by Title IX Press (now Moth Orchid Press) in 2019 and her second chapbook Alone, I Am Not, was published by Velvet Dusk Publishing in April 2022. |

Introduction We all see things. We all experience things. We all want to talk about them, but most often, we ignore them and before we can recollect, they pass. This was the case for most of my life. I have always been an avid reader, but words have always failed me when it comes to writing. And then, I was introduced to haiku. If I divide my life into two periods, it’ll be “before haiku” and “after haiku”. Before haiku, I used to look at things, appreciate them and move on with my life. I was aware, and yet, somehow totally unaware of the world around me. Writing haiku taught me to not only be aware but be present. It’s amazing how any art form changes the way you look at things and haiku did that for me. It rewired my brain and heightened my senses and perception. The mundane things started to seem extraordinary — such was the power of the shortest form of poetry. ~ Vandana Parashar |
