Introduction A resourceful 4th grade teacher turned a rheumatic fever diagnosis I’d been given into the beginning of my writing career. I couldn’t partake in PE or recesses due to my illness, which forced me to stay in the classroom when the rest of the students were romping around in the gym or outside. Likely to keep me from annoying her too much, this creative teacher suggested I read and write poetry to keep busy. I’ve never stopped; thank you, Mrs. Klessig. Writing and experiencing the writing of others have always been key ways for me to process meaning. In my poetry, I look to the everyday for truths, as I perceive them, and as markers on the journey. ~ Valorie Woerdehoff |
