Echoes Between Stars

by
Corey Cebulski

Writing haiku this semester has taught me to slow down and notice the world not just around me, but within me. The title of this collection, "Echoes Between Stars," reflects my discovery that even the quietest moments whether under the stars, walking through a hallway, or standing alone in a grocery store can carry deep emotional resonance. I’ve learned that haiku is not just about capturing nature, but about capturing feeling: wonder, heartbreak, longing, stillness, and joy.

Throughout the course, I explored different styles from traditional nature-based haiku to senryu and even science fiction-inspired SciFaiku. I allowed myself to blend inspiration from memory, present sensations, imagined futures, and intimate personal moments. I favored minimalism, immediacy, and emotional impact. Many of these poems are grounded in real experiences, while others are crafted from dreams or inner states of being.

This collection is a map of my evolving voice as a haiku writer, expressing not only external scenes but internal shifts. These short poems are my echo, captured in moments, sounding between the stars.

stargazing alone—
the silence between planets
fills me with questions

galaxies unfold
in a child's wide-open eyes—
dust becoming dreams

the Milky Way arcs
above this small campfire glow—
we burn just as brief

a comet passes
too fast for a second wish—
still, I make one

nebula swirl—
even in the dark unknown
beauty takes its shape

night’s canvas stretches
with stars I’ll never touch—
yet still, I reach

his jacket fit
too well on my shoulders—
I wore him home

library silence—
the hum of one lightbulb
fills the whole room
