Another Day Gone

by
Camryn Wagner

Before taking this class, I had no prior knowledge in poetry of any kind. I have come to love writing these short haikus that capture a reader’s interest, puts them in a moment, or bring back some memories.

I found that my favorite topics to write about are nature and my family. It is easy to create a haiku that can take someone to a situation where they can imagine what I am writing.

I chose my signature haiku and title of the book because Illinois sunsets are one of my favorite sights. They are a simple scenario that everyone can imagine. I hope many of my pieces are able to connect with my audience.

I would like to dedicate this collection to my family, my biggest inspiration.

sand between my toes
the gleam of a new day
peaks over the horizon

the grass against my feet
the orange and pink dip below
another day gone

three years later
his t-shirt still worn
no regrets

early morning class
my mind drifts
to a whole new world

bubble gum in a dish
fairness
in a kid’s world

I peel my cucumber
as the cookies
mock me

talk radio in the distance
my grandpa
enjoying a summer day

new recipe
the middle still gooey
what a flop

staring into the mirror
repeating my affirmations
. . . slay queen . . .

one up, one down,
standing in the middle
book ends of sisters

burial service over
monarch butterfly passes by
. . . grandma? . . .

the sound of Taps in the distance
I stop
and pay my respects in silence

high school lunch table, brown paper bag
never too old for mom’s
handwritten notes

colors of the rainbow
standing tall as soldiers
box of 64, sharpener included . . .

business world small talk
from one floor to the next
elevator drama

static from the record player
I dance to Elvis
with grandma
