In Her Blue Eyes: Jessica Poems

The Newborn Between Us

dawn's faint light . . .
the newborn between us
cooing in her sleep

newborn's cry?
old calico cat sniffs up and down
the crib rail
the minister's hand
over the baby's soft spot--
she hushes

worship service over,
our friends gather around
the babe in her arms
twinkle twinkle
little star; baby falls asleep
in the car

the top stair creaks--
the baby's fingers part
then settle back to sleep
rain on the window--
the newborn's fingers
catch in my beard
baby's eyes widen
to someone new . . .
lip puckers to a cry
