Course Goal

The primary goal of this course was to plan, develop, and complete a haiku writing project with the support and critical response of peers. As a pass/fail course, the secondary goal was to have fun sharing the creative process in a small workshop atmosphere. We celebrated the diversity of voices and variety of experiences which are evident in the various haiku collections.

Haiku Writing Roundtable

Course Description

EN170 Haiku Writing Roundtable was a student centered one-credit workshop modeled after writers' groups. This workshop met as a weekly reading circle. For the spring 2000 semester, we explored the Japanese and English haiku traditions. Students read and wrote about the haiku tradition, and tried ten approaches to composing their own original haiku including:

1 — on the spot writing
 2 — reader response associations
 3 — ginko haiku hike
 4 — zazen meditation
 5 — western visualization
 6 — imagination
 7 — consonance
 8 — dissonance
 9 — senryu
10 — renga

A special feature of the spring 2000 school session was that the students participated in the Global Haiku Festival at Millikin. Writers, editors and scholars of haiku from around the world came to Millikin to discuss contemporary haiku.
